A teenager was yesterday detained by detectives over the brutal murder of tragic student Cameron Reilly.

The suspect was taken to Drogheda Garda station and will appear before the town’s district court at 10am today.

A Garda spokesman said: “An 18-year-old man was arrested in connection with the investigation into the murder of Cameron

Reilly.” Cameron’s badly beaten body was found in a field by a dog walker near his home village of Dunleer, Co Louth, at 8am on May 26.

A murder probe was launched after a postmortem found the Dundalk IT student, 18, died from strangulation.

He was killed after a night out with pals in a field used by children and young adults for unregulated open air drinking. It is understood an earlier row had broken out beside a chipper and gardai believe Cameron was later killed at around 1am.

There were as many as 20 young people aged from 15 to 24 in the field before midnight, but it is believed only a small number witnessed the murder.

Officers said they faced a “wall of silence” when they spoke to some of the youngsters who were in the field at the time of his death.

Numerous appeals were made by gardai for Cameron’s missing mobile phone which they believed may contain vital clues which could identify his killer.

Gardai have so far spoken to and taken statements from over 100 people during the murder probe.

An 18-year-old suspect was previously arrested on June 15 in connection with the murder but was later released without charge. In recent days gardai said they believed critical forensic tests would lead them to the killer.
