Lucy Letby, 28, had also been held over the attempted murder of six other newborns.

She was arrested as part of a police investigation into the deaths of 17 babies at the Countess of Chester Hospital in 2015 and 2016.

Police continued to search the nurse’s €200,000 semi-detached home in Blacon, Chester, yesterday.

Letby was freed while the police probe continues. She will not be allowed to work while on bail, said a hospital spokesman.

A police spokesman said: “Parents of all the babies continue to be kept fully updated and are being supported by specially trained officers.” Elvis on stage in June and with wife Diana

TELLS FANS WHY HE IS CANCELLING HIS TOUR

The 63-year-old told fans yesterday that he had surgery to remove a tumour.

His return to playing gigs had put pressure on his recovery and he was going home to recuperate, he said.

Elvis, father of 12-year-old twin boys with jazz singer Diana Krall, said: “Six weeks ago my specialist called me and said, ‘You should start playing the Lotto’. “He had rarely, if ever, seen such a small but very aggressive cancerous malignancy that could be defeated by a single surgery.

“I was elated and relieved that our tour could go ahead. Guidelines for such surgery recommend three to four weeks’ recovery depending on whether you are returning to a desk job or an occupation that involves physical work.

“It was impossible to judge how this advisory would line up with the demands on a travelling musician, playing 90-minute to two-hour plus performances on a nightly basis.

STRENGTH

“The spirit has been more than willing but I have to now accept that it is going to take longer than I would have wished for me to recover my full strength.”

Vegetarian Elvis, who also has a grown-up son, has called off the final six dates of his European tour in Croatia, Austria, Norway and Sweden.

Elvis also advised fans to look after their own health, saying: “Take very good care of your loved ones but gentlemen, do talk to your friends – you’ll find you are not alone – seek your doctor’s advice if you are in doubt.

“It may save your life. Believe me, it is better than playing roulette.”

The Oliver’s Army singer rose to fame in the 1970s and has produced 21 influential albums, many with his bands the Attractions and the Imposters.

He announced he would release a new album in October. He added: “We will return at the soonest opportunity to play that music and your favourite songs that still make sense to us all.”
