THIS WILL MEAN MORE THAN 1966

- BY JOHN CROSS

GARETH SOUTHGATE claims winning the World Cup could make his England players even greater legends than the team of 1966.

Boss Southgate is just one game away from reaching England’s first major final since the days of Alf Ramsey’s Jules Rimet trophy winners.

And he has told his players what it would mean to lift the World Cup and become a generation of heroes.

He said: “We’ve talked,

touching briefly on the team that won the World Cup in 1966. How they’re still held and revered.

“At the beginning, we were working together with the lads and trying to sell them the vision of what’s possible, what we’re looking to achieve in the long-term.

“We’ve had events on, when we’ve been in camp. Some of those guys from 1966 have been in, such as when the road was named at St George’s after Sir Alf. I’ve met quite a few of those players and we know exactly the esteem in which they’re held.

“Perhaps, in the modern era, that (winning the tournament) would be even crazier, what with social media and everything else. The global thing is so much bigger.”

The Three Lions’ path to the semis has been met with fans partying in the streets in England. A small group of supporters even invaded an IKEA store in east London, dancing on beds and singing ‘It’s Coming Home’.
