First of giant dinosaurs is discovered

- BY MARK WAGHORN

Ingentia prima A DINOSAUR the size of a double-decker bus that roamed more than 200 million years ago has been dug up by scientists.

The discovery in Argentina shows huge dinosaurs emerged around 30 million years earlier than thought.

Ingentia prima was about 33ft long, 14ft tall and weighed up to 10 tons. It was among the first huge sauropods that evolved into the largest animals to ever live on dry land.

Its later cousins Brachiosaurus and Diplodocus stretched to 130ft and weighed up to 80 tons.

Dr Cecilia Apaldetti, of the University of San Juan, said: “It was at least twice as large as other herbivores of the time. It changes our understanding of how this group of species became an immense size.”
