Michael D: I will run for second term as President
Higgins confirms another bid
MICHAEL D Higgins announced he is to run for President again – confirming what had been widely believed would happen in political circles for months.
The 77-year-old is already odds on at 1/10 with some bookmakers to win another term in the Aras.
Speaking in Co Mayo yesterday, Mr Higgins said many people he met during his time as leader had encouraged him to stand again.
He added: “I have now met all those demands, both ceremonial, constitutional and political and have responded with what I believe to be the best of my abilities.
“It is therefore in a full understanding and consideration of all the requirements of the role that I will be offering myself as a candidate to serve and represent the Irish people.
“I believe there are good foundations for the further development of the Office of President and that the experience I brought to, and have gained within the role, could be of particular value as we enter a period of great challenge and possibility, at home and abroad.”
Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou Mcdonald has indicated her party will likely field a candidate.
Fianna Fail, Labour and Fine Gael all revealed they won’t be opposing Mr Higgins. However, some inde-
Michael D Higgins pendent senators could announce their candidature in October’s race.
The most outspoken of these has been Gerard Craughwell.
Last night he wrote to Oireachtas members to seek their support in forcing a contest.
He said: “I believe a system which prevents candidates other than the incumbent from securing a nomination and mounting a challenge is profoundly undemocratic.
“I urge you to support my campaign for a democratic presidential election which upholds and respects the proclaimed values of Bunreacht na heireann.”
