MORTIMER & WHITEHOUSE: GONE FISHING

- BY SHARON MCGOWAN

BBC2, 11.15pm

This is a charming show that follows comedians Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse as they go fishing in various beauty spots around the country.

As far as the fishing goes, it’s a bit of a non-event, aside from the occasional sudden arrival of a roach.

They are visiting the River Wensum in Norfolk, and Bob is in charge of cooking healthy food and finding accommodation. This time they stay overnight in a disused railway station – and there’s a treat in store with dinner at the local pub.

Conversation seems mainly to be about how age is taking its toll, with Bob helping Paul recapture his youth with a new look.

Then they decide to discuss their ailments “from the toes up”, and it’s not for the fainthearted (which, incidentally, is their biggest shared ailment).

“Any deafness?” asks Paul. “Eh?” retorts Bob. Ah, the old ones are the best. That could be said for these comedy legends too.
