TOMBSTONIN­G COULD PUT YOU IN YOUR TOMB.. Warning over kids risking their lives with cliff jumps

Cool days lie ahead THE unpredicta­ble weather is back as it’s finally starting to feel like a real Irish summer.

Hot and humid conditions have been broken by showery spells and Met Eireann warned it’s going to get colder too. Today and tomorrow will be warm and sunny, before the temperatur­e plunges from Friday onwards.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: “Wednesday will be dry in most areas, with sunny spells.

“It will be cloudier along Atlantic coasts, with patches of rain and drizzle, extending further inland across parts of Connacht during the morning.

“Maximum temperatur­es 17C to 24C on Atlantic coasts.

“Thursday is expected to be warm and extremely humid for most of the day and Friday will YOUNG people “tombstonin­g” by diving off treacherou­s high cliffs into the sea are dicing with death, a council has said.

The warning comes after a video emerged on social media showing young people diving into the sea from high ledges at Kilkee, Co Clare.

Referring to the footage the local authority stated in a Facebook post: “Clare County Council strongly advises the public NOT to engage in such activities.

“This is extremely dangerous and could have life-altering repercussi­ons.”

One of the six people in the video jumping off the edge of the cliff into the water, narrowly missing rocks at the bottom.

The council urged parents to talk to their children about the dangers of so-called “tombstonin­g”.

The name comes from the perilous act of jumping in a vertical position into the sea from a high platform and refers to the rigid body position held by participan­ts.

Hitting the water from a great height or hitting hidden rocks under the water can and has proved fatal.

The council added: “Clare County Council advises members of the public to swim only at one of the 11 lifeguarde­d beaches or in areas that are known locally as safe, and where there are ring-buoys present to conduct a safe rescue.”

There are also signs posted along the cliffs at Newfoundou­t, Kilkee, advising people against diving from the cliff edge or rocks.

The council also said that there are diving boards at the west end of Kilkee which can be used as tidal conditions are ideal.

The video sparked outrage from social media users.

One person wrote on Facebook: “Young and stupid. Parents need to stress the dangers of this. Kids think they’re invincible.”

Another said: “I saw this for myself yesterday, it’s scary to see kids doing this. Why can’t they just use the diving boards.

“They jump from rocks beyond the boards too though. I don’t know, it’s mad.”

There have been 139 injuries and 20 deaths in the UK due to tombstonin­g recorded by the Coast Guard between 2004 and 2013, including children aged 12 or older.

The video circulatin­g on social media was shot close to where Coast Guard volunteer Caitriona Lucas died on September 12, 2016, when her boat capsized during a search for a missing teacher.

Lucas, who was a librarian for Clare County Council, was the first member of the Irish Coast Guard to die on the job. see a return to last weekend’s cooler weather and most parts will experience good dry spells after the morning rain. Maximum temperatur­es 16C to 21C.
