GAA bosses to consider proposal for Liam match

- BY CATE MCCURRY

GAA chiefs will consider a new proposal discussed at a meeting with the organisers of the memorial match for Liam Miller.

It comes after organisers were refused permission to host the game at Cork’s Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

Miller, a former Ireland, Celtic, Manchester United and Cork City midfielder, died of cancer in February aged 36.

A charity match between a Man United legends team and a Celtic/ Ireland side is scheduled for September 25.

It is now scheduled for Turners Cross soccer stadium in Cork, which has a capacity of 7,500

Pairc Ui Chaoimh’s 45,000 capacity could have increased the funds raised for the family and charitable causes by an estimated €2million.

A joint statement said: “A meeting took place between the GAA and members of the organising committee of the Liam Miller Tribute Match.

“Both parties agreed that the meeting was open and constructive and the GAA will now further consider the proposal discussed at the meeting.

“There will be no further comment from any of the parties involved in these discussions at this time.”

the liam miller match saga is beyond ridiculous at this stage.

The public find it hard to understand how a solution cannot be found that would allow this fundraising event at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

Thousands of fans want to pay their own tribute to the late player but will be denied the chance if it goes ahead at Turner’s Cross.

It is hard to avoid the conclusion is a throwback to the bad old days when the GAA regarded soccer and rugby as “garrison games”.

The Association must do the decent thing and allow this game to go ahead at Pairc Ui Chaoimh without any more delays.
