KLOPP’S U-TURN HANDS STURRIDGE NEW START

- FROM DAVID ANDERSON in New York

DANIEL STURRIDGE has been handed a Liverpool lifeline after an incredible U-turn by Jurgen Klopp.

His time at Anfield looked over when the manager let him join West Brom on loan for the second half of last season.

Klopp felt he could not rely on

Sturridge because of his injury record and the England striker only played a handful of games as the Baggies were relegated.

But now Sturridge is back in favour with the German, who has been delighted with his attitude and performances in pre-season, scoring three goals.

The 28-year-old’s £120,000-a-week deal ends next June and manager Klopp (right) is giving him the opportunity to earn a new contract.

He has promoted Sturridge back up his attacking pecking order above Danny Ings and Divock Origi, who both look set to leave. The Liverpool boss feels the striker can be an important player for him, especially with so many of the club’s big names reporting back late after the World Cup.

Klopp praised Sturridge during Liverpool’s American tour, saying: “He’s in very good shape, that’s true.

“He’s been part of pretty much all sessions in a very intense pre-season so far.

“Who doubts Daniel Sturridge when he’s fit? I don’t! Outstanding player, hopefully he can stay fit and then the future is bright.

“He’s young enough. It’s not like he’s 30 something. He’s still in his 20s, so that’s good.”

Sturridge, who has scored 63 goals for the Reds, is relishing his new lease of life and said: “I love it here. I love the lads and the banter in the group is unbelievable. I feel at home again.”
