Jose worries he doesn’t have enough firepower to bring back the title

- FROM DAVID MCDONNELL in Los Angeles

JOSE MOURINHO fears Manchester United’s squad is not strong enough to win the title.

He believes they are still two players short of being able to challenge champions Manchester City, and is worried he could miss out on targets with the transfer deadline looming.

Asked if the talent at his disposal had the quality needed, the Reds boss said only: “I don’t answer to your question.”

Quizzed on how many new faces he might need, he said: “I would get two more players. One thing is what I would like. Another thing is what is going to happen.”

While Liverpool have spent

£175million on strengthening over the summer, United’s only significant outlay has been £52m on midfielder Fred.

Mourinho is known to be frustrated at United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward’s failure to have landed all of his transfer targets.

The United manager’s subsequent public admission of wanting two more signings is a blatant message to Woodward to get a move on and land the players he wants.

Top of his wish-list are Leicester’s England defender Harry Maguire, and Inter Milan and Croatia winger Ivan Perisic.

They are likely to cost a total of £130m, and Mourinho wants deals wrapped up as soon as possible. The transfer window closes on August 9. Apart from Fred, United’s only new arrivals are £19m defender Diogo Dalot from Porto and 35-year-old Lee Grant, a £1.5m buy from Stoke as a reserve goalkeeper.
