MORE listeners are tuning into Newstalk’s Ivan Yates than former Late Late host Pat Kenny.

Figures reveal the ex-politician, who hosts The Hard Shoulder, gained 8,000 in the last three months, with 153,000 people tuning in.

The TV3 star is now one of the biggest ratings winners for Newstalk – overtaking Kenny whose figures increased by 4,000 to 152,000 in the last quarter.

Kenny joined the station in a multimillion euro deal in

2013, while Yates rejoined the station in September after a hiatus of over a year.

There was also good news with the latest Joint National Readership figures (JNLRS) for RTE Radio One and 2fm.

Ray D’arcy boosted his afternoon show numbers by 14,000, bringing his listenership to 219,000. The News At One recorded the same increase and now has an audience of 346,000.

Morning Ireland remains the top show on Irish radio, attracting 438,000 listeners – a jump of 7,000.

Joe Duffy’s Live Line added 11,000 listeners in the last book, up to 381,000. Ryan Tubridy and Sean O’rourke boosted their morning slots to 311,000 and 307,000 respectively.

And an additional 5,000 tuned into veteran Marian Finucane’s Saturday show, earning an audience of 329,000.

On 2fm, listenership for The Nicky Byrne Show with Jenny Greene stayed on 148,000.

The figures come as 2fm chief Dan Healy calls for a licence fee reform.

He added: “Every three months RTE are proving that we’re creating audio content that people want and it’s worth paying for.”
