Cops need all help in perv fight

-

THE revelation that gardai discovered child sex dolls in a raid is deeply disturbing.

It offers an insight into the minds of those who take gratification from the abuse of the most vulnerable.

Officers involved in Operation Ketch revealed how they uncovered hundreds of thousands of child sex images and even caught two juveniles in the act of downloading them.

This is hugely difficult work for the officers tasked with viewing the images and they deserve all the support we can offer.

One area where support may be lacking is in the internet companies that have yet to close the door on trafficking of such images.

Assistant Commissioner John O’driscoll and his team have raised the issue that these sites need to do more.

Surely our politicians can lead the charge here and make legislation that orders these companies to act in the public interest.

The backlog of processing the workload was a stark sign of the gutting of our police force.

But the Garda revealed yesterday that more work is being completed because resourcing has been increased – this must be welcomed.

Although many of the victims in the images do not live in Ireland, the perpetrators distributing them certainly do.

This surely is one of the most important areas of policing and the funding sought by gardai must be provided in that direction.
