Flooding fears as the heat is gone..

MORE than 150 firefighte­rs tackled an inferno on tinder-dry fields as the heatwave came to a dramatic end in Britain.

Storms and torrential rain sparked mayhem, while an estimated 90,000 lightning strikes started wildfires across the country.

A wall of flame erupted at Ferndown Common in Dorset and blazes started in KEEP brollies out because we’re set to be hit with more heavy showers over the weekend.

Temperatur­es are also set to plummet from the mid-20s down to 15C to 18C today, putting an end to weeks of sweltering heat.

Met Eireann issued a yellow weather warning for downpours of up to 25mm to 40mm of rainfall for Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal and Waterford from 9pm last night until 9am today.

The Road Safety Authority is urging motorists to watch out for flash flooding and the risk of aquaplanin­g.

It said: “Flooded roads could be deeper than you think so do not attempt to drive through them.

“Following the recent dry weather a build-up of oil and rubber deposit may have developed on the roads.

“After a long spell of dry weather these deposits mix with rainwater and the road becomes hazardous. The fields at North Wales, Hampshire, Surrey and Hertfordsh­ire. A house in Langold, Notts, burst into flames after being hit by lightning. No one was hurt.

Thousands of Eurotunnel passengers faced delays of about two hours in Kent after air conditioni­ng failed and rail services across the land were disrupted. Hundreds of air passengers were hit with long delays and cancellati­ons due to storms after air traffic controller NATS put restrictio­ns in place.
