GAA to open doors for Liam game..along with their own fundraiser
THE GAA’S Central Council is expected this morning to green light the Liam Miller tribute match for Pairc Ui Chaoimh.
Croke Park’s Management Committee met last night to discuss proposals around the hosting of the game at the revamped home of Cork GAA.
There were reports last night that a joint fundraiser at the 45,000 capacity Cork ground, involving a soccer match and a GAA match, was one of the proposals discussed by the 15-strong committee.
However, organisers of the Miller tribute game may not be
happy with the plan to play a Hurling match as a curtain raiser.
A GAA spokesperson last night refused to comment on the outcome of the meeting but confirmed that a statement would follow Central Council’s deliberations.
The Central Council meeting was called at short notice this week following a meeting of GAA top brass with the organisers of the Miller tribute game.
The recommendation of the Management Committee is expected to carry the proposal through, some eight days after the GAA insisted that it was not possible under the current rules to host the soccer match at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.
That statement led to a backlash against the association, with former Ireland international Damien Duff describing GAA bosses as “dinosaurs” for not opening the ground up due to the special circumstance, which is to aid Miller’s wife and three children.
A Management Committee proposal could see the game held as part of a joint fundraiser, with profits also going to a GAA player injury fund.
Miller died in February from cancer.
