Concern over missing items during Sophie murder probe
Love Island star lashes out at trolls
Sophie THE Garda watchdog has “grave concerns” over missing statements and exhibits relating to the Sophie Toscan du Plantier murder probe.
A report by the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission criticised the handling of the investigation. It said the missing items suggest the case was not managed properly.
The French woman was beaten to death at her holiday home outside Schull in West Cork just before Christmas in 1996.
The report stated witness statements from senior gardai “do not indicate clearly who was in charge of the investigation from the outset and through the enquiry”.
It said the evidence also did not show “who was responsible for making the strategic decisions – including the arrest plans”.
The report was published yesterday after an investigation into complaints by Ian Bailey, his partner Jules Thomas and witness Marie Farrell relating to the case.
It found there was nothing to back claims by Mr Bailey, Ms Thomas and Ms Farrell “of high-level corruption by gardai” during the murder probe.
Mr Bailey, who always protested his innocence, was twice arrested for questioning but never charged in relation to the murder.

But the 21-year-old, dating fellow Islander Adam Collard, 22, refuses to bow to pressure to have surgery.
She admitted hurtful remarks from trolls “wear people down to the point of no return”.
Zara took to Instagram to blast the “bullying” after sharing a snap of herself in a tight bikini on a family holiday with Adam in Bulgaria. One troll posted: “Looks like she smooshed her t*ts together for the pic.
“Why not just get a boob job to go with all the other plastic?”
Zara replied: “A disgusting thing to say. Why wish surgery on someone?
“I haven’t got any other ‘plastic’ in my body by the way.”
She added: “If there is something I will never be able to accept about this industry, it’s the hate people give out. People wonder why things such as anxiety and depression exist. This is the reason.
“Luckily, I’m strong enough not to cave in and get the surgery.”
Zara claims not to have had any cosmetic ops but the majority of contestants on the ITV2 show admit to enhancements.
Finalists Laura Anderson, Kaz Crossley and Megan Bartonhanson said they had had boob jobs – with only the winner, Dani Dyer, being natural.
Megan, 24, who came fourth with Wes Nelson, claimed boob jobs were “just like getting your hair done”. Simon Stevens, NHS England boss, blasted the screening of adverts for diets and cosmetic surgery during the show.
ITV chief Carolyn Mccall admitted they were wrong to air the commercials and will review the decision.
With a four million average audience, Love Island was the most-watched show by 16 to 34-year-olds this year – apart from the World Cup.

for her fears about forests, Stella Creasy MP – also a Labour Love Island fan – said Hayley was right to be concerned.
Stella added: “It’s going to affect everything, so it could affect the trees because the relationship with Europe covers things like the environment and things like pollution, so it does cover everything including the trees.”
