SALFORD ALL READY FOR MOOR

- BY JON WEST

RORY GAFFNEY reckons SALFORD CITY can go all the way this season.

The National League newcomers are bankrolled at Moor Lane by a group of ex-manchester United stars, including Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville.

Eyebrows were raised when Salford lured striker Adam Rooney away from Scottish Premiership runners-up Aberdeen on wages of £4,000 a week.

Gaffney was another summer recruit, from Bristol Rovers, and marked his debut with Salford’s second-half opener against relegated LEYTON ORIENT.

Graham Alexander’s side were just two minutes away from victory before Liam Hogan’s own goal gave the O’s a 1-1 draw.

Gaffney said: “Leyton Orient are a good team and they have plans to be at the top, or at least get to the play-offs, so this bodes well for our season.”

BARROW impressed with a 3-0 home win over newlypromoted HAVANT AND WATERLOOVILLE.

Jack Hindle scored twice but the Hawks didn’t deserve to make the 330-mile trudge home empty-handed, according to striker Nicke Kabamba.

He said: “The first goal, hands up, they have put it in the top corner.

“For the second and third it was a bit frustrating for us defensively, but it was never a 3-0 game.”

CHESTERFIELD tasted victory following demotion from the Football League.

Zavon Hines (above) tucked away a 65th-minute penalty at EBBSFLEET.

But boss Martin Allen was not impressed with his Spireites overall.

He said: “First half I thought we were awful, but second half I thought we played better.

“Credit to the players for stepping it up – they had to.

“I haven’t come here to mess about, I’ve come for some action and that’s what they’re going to get.”
