GERRARD SEES RED

Gers boss demands discipline is improved after another dismissal

- BY DAVID MCCARTHY

STEVEN GERRARD last night warned his Rangers players to improve their disciplinary record after they ended a second Premiership game in a row with 10 men.

The Ibrox boss was delighted with the 2-0 win over St Mirren, achieved after Ross Mccrorie was sent off (inset) with a hour to play.

But hot on the heels of Alfredo Morelos’ red card at Pittodrie last week – later rescinded – Gerrard wants his players to stop giving refs decisions to make.

He said: “I’m very happy with the result and performance in the circumstances.

“Again, we’ve gone down to 10 men. I thought that was the correct decision.

The ref got that one right.

“I have spoken to the team and praised them for the result and clean sheet. But I have also spoken about discipline and composure out there.

“It’s difficult enough with 11 men. We’re picking up too many red and yellow cards for my liking. But we’ll learn, grow and keep going.

“The response from my team, every single one of them rolled their sleeves up and did what they had to do. I was pleased with the clean sheet in the circumstances. It’s a positive result for us. I would have liked to have kept 11 on the pitch and maybe win the game more emphatically but at the end of the day it’s all about three points.

“It was completely different to last week when we felt hard done by. We said our piece and got justice in terms of the decision being overturned.

“I thought the officials were really, really good. They got the decision spot on, we have no complaints.” Goals from Alfredo Morelos, his third of the season, and Connor Goldson were enough to win it but there was a late fitness scare for Lassana Coulibaly, who limped off leaving his side to finish with nine men. Gerrard refused to comment on his club’s chances of landing Hearts striker Kyle Lafferty but it’s believed the interest remains very much alive.

However, hopes of using left-back Lee Wallace as a makeweight in the deal look doomed to failure due to the player’s Ibrox wages.

Gerrard said: “It’s not for me to speak about Kyle Lafferty, he’s not our player. There is not long left in the window. At the moment there’s nothing to say on the matter.”
