KYLE MAKES LIGHT WORK OF IPSWICH

ROTHERHAM’S last-gasp, backs-to-the-wall win was nothing new for Kyle Vassell on his home debut.

The 26-year-old striker was hugely impressive as boss Paul Warne (above) saw Michael Smith shatter Ipswich at the death.

But for Vassell, who joined the Millers during the summer from Blackpool, the late tension has to be put in context.

He said: “I used to work and cannot say what I do now is a job. I have had to work very hard to get here and now I am not going to stop doing that.

“Groundworks was my trade, the worst of the worst in the middle of winter. It is just literally getting buckets of water out of trenches.

“My dad was a bricklayer and that’s what I’m good at. If anyone wants any walls built, I’m free on Sundays.”

Ipswich dominated for long periods without creating any clear-cut chances.

Vassell said: “Wins like this in the 90th minute are the best you can get – instead of scoring in the 10th minute and holding out for 80 minutes.” Ipswich’s experienced midfielder Cole Skuse said: “We’re angry and disappointed that we have left with nothing.

“If you’re not going to win the game, then at least see the game out and don’t lose it and deal with the set-piece at the end – which we didn’t.”
