A SELECTION

-

of the best hurlers from the 1990s will be honoured at Croke Park this Sunday.

It’s a break from the tradition of parading the silver jubilee team, with Kilkenny’s All-ireland champions of 1992 and ‘93 having been honoured last year.

A panel of journalists have selected the best XV from that era and this is what they came up with: Damien Fitzhenry (Wexford); Brian Corcoran (Cork)

Brian Lohan (Clare)

Martin Hanamy (Offaly) Brian Whelahan (Offaly) Seanie Mcmahon (Clare) Liam Dunne (Wexford)

Ciaran Carey (Limerick) Michael Coleman (Galway) Martin Storey (Wexford) Gary Kirby (Limerick) Jamesie O’connor (Clare) Michael Cleary (Tipperary) DJ Carey (Kilkenny)

Johnny Dooley (Offaly)

The joy of such selections is the debate that they generate and, given that it’s highly unlikely that each member of the panel agreed entirely with the final choice, it’s hardly surprising that we have our own reservations.

Here’s our preferred line-up from that era: Damien Fitzhenry (Wexford) Brian Corcoran (Cork)

Brian Lohan (Clare)

Martin Hanamy (Offaly) Brian Whelahan (Offaly) Seanie Mcmahon (Clare) Willie O’connor (Kilkenny) Ciaran Carey (Limerick)

Ollie Baker (Clare)

Johnny Dooley (Offaly)

John Troy (Offaly)

Jamesie O’connor (Clare) Pat Fox (Tipperary)

Gary Kirby (Limerick) DJ Carey, above, (Kilkenny)
