- BY PAT FLANAGAN

A FATHER in his 60s who died after a brutal knife attack in his home had his throat cut, it has emerged.

Gerard Fortune suffered severe blood loss after a main artery was severed in the horrific assault on Sunday at around 8pm.

Emergency services were called to the scene where he was discovered with stab wounds to the neck.

The 63-year-old was rushed from his home in Rutland Grove, Crumlin, Dublin, to St James’s Hospital where he worked as a carer.

Mr Fortune was pronounced dead in front of colleagues who had tried to save him.

A man in his 30s fled the scene in what is believed to have been a stolen car.

A male suspect was later arrested and was last night being questioned by detectives.

It is understood the attacker was known to the victim.

The suspect is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at Crumlin Garda station. Dublin City Councillor Daithi Doolan said the area is shocked at Mr Fortune’s tragic death.

He added: “My deepest sympathy to his family. The people in the area are very shocked at what happened.

“Unfortunately it is an all-too familiar event in the city now.

“I also extend my sympathies to Mr Fortune’s colleagues at St James’s who did their best to try and save his life.

“I hope anyone with any information will fully co-operate with gardai.” Officers have appealed to the public for help with their investigation and in particular are interested in the movements of a red Toyota Yaris.

Superintendent Michael Cryan said: “We are appealing to anyone in the Rutland Grove and Clogher Road area of Dublin 12 between 8pm and 8.15pm on Sunday to come forward.

“We are also trying to trace the movements of a red Toyota Yaris, described as a four-door hatchback with L plates and partial registration 04-WW.

“It was driven from the scene at Rutland Grove at around 8pm before it was recovered at

8.20pm at

Connolly Hospital, Blanchardstown, Dublin.

“We would also appeal to anyone with dash cam footage from the areas mentioned.”
