CARBERY TO MAKE REDS CHAMPIONS SAYS RONAN O’GARA
RONAN O’gara believes Joey Carbery can make all the difference to Munster’s trophy ambitions.
“They’re not far away. They have a few strategic decisions maybe to make of how they want to play the game, to suit Earlsy (Keith Earls) and others.
“But it will be a very natural game to Joey because Conor (Murray) can do a lot of the kicking.
“I don’t know how good Joey’s kicking game is because we haven’t seen enough of him to see, in winter rugby, can he play that game.
“I know it’s a possession game but Munster can’t neglect their strengths, either – they’ve a good pack of forwards who like the ball in front of them, they’ve a good driving maul, a good defence. But they need to add to that.”
O’gara, who was succeeded in the Ireland out-half role by
Sexton and who coached the
Dubliner at Racing 92, feels the competition between Sexton and Carbery will make them both better ahead of next year’s
World Cup.
“The great thing about it is by
Joey going well, Johnny will go better,” he said. “That’s how it works because it’s just natural.
“As insane a competitor as
Johnny is, there’ll be a time when there will be an overlap.
“There was in Johnny and my case and the exuberance of youth will win. Whether that will be two years or four years’ time, who knows.”
