Finglas church ONE of Ireland’s largest Catholic Churches will close its doors next month due to falling attendances.

The Church of Annunciation in Finglas, North Dublin, will be demolished and replaced by a smaller building.

Archbishop Diarmuid Martin will celebrate its final Mass on October 7.

Parish priest Fr Eamann Cahill previously said they had been struggling with numbers.

Local people responded to the news yesterday.

One person said: “Sad day for Finglas. Church has many happy memories for us. Christenings weddings and of course funerals.

“The older generation will miss the church as it was the weekly meeting point for them.” U2’S European tour could be in doubt after the band were forced to cancel a concert after Bono lost his voice.

The Dublin rockers said they had no option but to leave the stage at the Berlin venue when he could no longer sing.

Fans in Germany were geared up to enjoy the Irish band’s second European show on their Experience + Innocence tour at the Mercedes-benz Arena on Saturday evening, but after just a few songs the frontman lost his voice.

It is not yet known if U2 will perform in the Lanxess Arena in Cologne as scheduled tomorrow night.

Bono had been singing Red Flag Day and had started Beautiful Day before he stopped and apologised to the crowd.

He is reported to have said: “I think we can’t go on. It’s not right for you.”

Fans were told there would be a short break before the gig ended. The singer is said to have promised to arrange another show.

A statement on U2’s website – signed by Adam, Larry and The Edge – said: “We’re so sorry for tonight’s cancellation. Band performing on Saturday night before they cancelled gig
