Macca: I saw God & Linda came back as a squirrel

SIR Paul Mccartney has claimed he saw God while tripping on drugs and later thought he saw his late wife Linda reincarnated as a squirrel.

The 76-year-old former Beatle said he had the messiah experience while on a hallucinogenic drug which was so potent it left him “nailed to the sofa”.

He explained: “I saw God, this amazingly huge, towering thing and I was humbled.”

Sir Paul said the vision was “a massive wall that I couldn’t see the top of, and I was at the bottom”.

The rocker had taken the drug dimethyltryptamine (DMT) with art gallery owner Robert Fraser, who died in 1986, and two others. Fraser reported having a similar experience.

DMT, which is usually smoked or injected, became popular in the 1960s because it worked faster than LSD.

It causes intense and abstract “trips” and many users have reported having almost out-ofbody experiences.

Sir Paul added: “Anybody else would say it’s just the drug, the hallucination, but both Robert and I were like, ‘Did you see that?’ We felt we had seen a higher thing.”

The pop legend also said he saw a white squirrel in the countryside and felt convinced it was his late wife Linda, who had “come back to give me a sign”.

American Linda died of breast cancer in 1998. Paul met her at a concert in London, where she was working as a photographer in 1968, and they married the following year.

They had four children, Linda’s daughter Heather, whom Paul adopted, and Mary, Stella and James.

Sir Paul, now married to American Nancy Shevell, 58, said he liked to “cherry-pick” his beliefs from different religions.

But he suggested the sighting had led to him believing in the possibility of a spiritual afterlife.

He said: “It was a great moment – it thrilled me.

“Obviously I have no proof it was her

but it was good for me to think that.” Unlike many rockers of his generation, Sir Paul shows few signs of slowing down and his recent appearance on James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke series – where the pair went to Liverpool for a unique pub gig – was acclaimed by critics.

On the weekend he announced five US dates on his tour in support of new album Egypt Station.

His December concerts in the UK sold out in seconds.

Sir Paul also told the Sunday Times he admired the Queen, saying he was proud to be “one of her subjects”.

He said he and fellow Beatles John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr had always admired the monarch.

“She was a good-looking woman to us, so we were always fans,” he said.

■ Egypt Station is released on Friday.

Anyone would say it’s just a drug or hallucination... we felt we’d seen a higher thing
