Martin’s a poll apart from Leo

- LORD HENRY

WAITING for the Dail to return after its long summer break, I have been asking myself a simple question. Can those who are not ardent supporters of Fianna Fail forgive them for their sins of the past? Remember Micheal Martin sat around the Cabinet table when irresponsible and misguided decisions were taken.

Well, interestingly, it seems Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes appreciates the Fianna Fail leader’s contribution towards political stability.

In Tuesday’s Independent, he said he “deserves credit for the maturity with which he has managed the new political dispensation”.

I wonder if Brian Hayes could say the same about the Taoiseach. It seems Leo’s attempt to provoke Mr Martin by his open letter pointing out all the wonderful things his Government has done did not display “maturity or integrity”.

Fianna Fail agreed to support this government through three Budgets. It is in the midst of pre-budget talks. It strikes me as unreasonable to expect them to hold parallel talks about

Micheal Martin Confidence and Supply. Does the Taoiseach think his popularity is waning so is seeking to call an election sooner rather than later? He wants to be careful if those floating voters start to feel like Mr Hayes.

Add to the fact Mr Martin burnished his liberal credentials by his stance on the Eighth Amendment and you might have a scenario where the Soldiers of Destiny could give the Blue Shirts a run for their electoral money.

So, the Donald isn’t coming, or is he ? I’m sure the government is heaving a sigh of relief. I can personally put aside my TRUCK FRUMP poster.

As I write, Hurricane Florence is barrelling towards the US and the President is claiming he is getting “tremendous accolades” for his handling of the crisis.

This is the same man who claims the Democrats exaggerated the death toll of Hurricane Maria to discredit him. In truth, he is a self-obsessed climate change denier.
