JOHN’S LION TO BE ROARING SUCCESS

- BY ROBERT HYNES

IRISH Champions Weekend takes place over the next two days and promises to be one hell of a spectacle.

Six Group One races are to be contested between Leopardstown and the Curragh.

And should take all the beating in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown today.

John Gosden’s three-year-old has produced some incredible performances this season, including when landing the Eclipse and Juddmonte International on his last two starts.

He renews his rivalry with

yet again, having narrowly finished ahead of him in the Eclipse.

But Roaring Lion looks to be a horse who has improved with every run this season and I fancy him to win here.

And the other Group 1 at the Dublin venue should also go to an odds-on favourite in super filly

She has easily won her last three starts and is another horse who has improved massively this year.

She’ll be a short price, but cannot be backed against. Meanwhile at Doncaster this afternoon,

is my pick for the St Leger. This has been the plan for this lad for some time and he won by four and a half lengths at his only other start over the distance.

has a likable profile, having won all her three starts, but I believe Kew Gardens is the horse that the others will have to beat.

Also at Doncaster, should once again prove too darn hot for his opponents in the Howcroft Industrial Supplies Champagne Stakes.

He has won his two starts to date by a combined total of 11 lengths and could win emphatically yet again.

Looking ahead to tomorrow and day two of Irish Champions Weekend, there’s four Group 1 contests taking place at the Curragh.

My bet of the day on Sunday is

in the Irish St Leger for young trainer Joseph O’brien.

The Irish Derby winner could have went for the English Leger instead, but has opted to stay on home soil.

He finished second last in the

Juddmonte last time, but won over longer trips the two times before that and I think he will relish this distance.

Aidan O’brien has a strong hand in the Vincent O’brien National Stakes and Anthony Van Dyck looks the pick of them.

Having won his last three starts, two of them by big distances, he should be a tough nut to crack yet again.

Get on Latrobe (9/4) in tomorrow’s 4.50 at the Curragh. On a weekend where there’s plenty of odds-on favourites, at the prices Latrobe looks a cracking bet in the Irish St Leger going back up in trip. Bet on another big race win for the in form Joseph O’brien.
