Sharkey quits ‘corrupt’ circus race to the Aras Candidate Kevin drops out of campaign to focus on his art
Kevin Sharkey KEVIN Sharkey has withdrawn from the presidential race to focus on his art.
The painter released a statement on his Twitter page yesterday announcing he was “leaving the circus”.
Mr Sharkey said he was pulling out of the campaign “due to the corruption of the local councils all over Ireland”.
Based in Balbriggan, North Dublin, he said: “I am leaving the circus farce that has become the presidential race to focus on my new collection of paintings. I am also looking forward to the release of my first single.”
The 57-year-old used the statement to reveal his latest artistic offerings – The Presidential Collection 2018 – will be launched on Friday evening.
Mr Sharkey went on to thank the “several councils and councillors who promised me their votes” and asked them to transfer their support to Gemma O’doherty. He said: “She is a woman of huge integrity and is currently bravely shining a light on the corruption destroying our beautiful country and democracy.”
The statement also revealed his single will be released on itunes next month. Twitter users were quick to accuse him of using the presidential race as a means to promote his own agenda.
One wrote: “Used the circus farce to self promote his art.” Another added: “Calling it a farce is a bit hypocritical as you used the presidential race to promote your artwork.”
Meanwhile, the latest poll has shown Michael D Higgins has more than four times the support of other presidential hopefuls.
