Time is up for culture of vultures

-

LABOUR leader Brendan Howlin’s call for a ban on mortgage sales to vulture funds must be welcomed.

It’s hard to believe the Government stands idly by and watches as tens of thousands of people are thrown to the wolves by the banks.

More galling is we as taxpayers own a controlling share in many lenders.

Mr Varadkar’s administration pretends solving the housing crisis is at the top of its agenda but there’s little evidence of this.

Letting a bank we own like Permanent TSB sell off 10,000 loans to Cerberus, a US vulture fund, without shouting stop should tell you where the Government’s priorities lie.

There wasn’t so much as a whimper from Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe.

His colleague Minister Eoghan Murphy also deafened us with his silence on the issue.

Meanwhile, men and women break down in tears when they learn of the horrible dilemma the Government had landed them in.

Labour is now calling through the Irish Mirror for the whip to be used against the banks.

Mr Howlin is demanding a blanket ban on sales to vulture funds.

And if the banks don’t play ball there should be legislation introduced to force them to.

This should put some manners on them and it is something the Irish Mirror wholeheartedly supports.
