IT’S FISK AND REWARD

Ben hoping his first cup success will help earn him a recall for Canada

- BY PAUL O’HEHIR

BEN FISK is hoping trophy success with Derry City can catapult him back on to the world stage.

The Canadian international joined the Candystripes in June and lifted his first piece of silverware on Sunday when Derry beat Cobh Ramblers in the EA Sports Cup final.

And focus now shifts to in-form Bohemians who arrive at the Brandywell tomorrow night for an FAI Cup quarterfinal clash.

Fisk won both of his international caps – having represented his country at U23 level in the Pan American Games (below) – for Canada last year when starting in a 4-2 win over Bermuda before coming off the bench in 1-1 draw with Scotland, which he says was the highlight of his career.

He was playing for FC Edmonton in the North American Soccer League at the time but the club has since folded and he has fallen off Canada’s radar. Edmonton is the reason why he pitched up at Derry. Dean

Shiels – son of manager

Kenny – was a team-mate before he too signed with the Brandywell outfit this summer.

Fisk said: “I was without a club and Deano got in touch with me and said that Ronan Curtis was joining Portsmouth. He said there would be an opportunity at Derry City if I was interested as they had a void to fill.

“That’s when I started to research the club and I saw they were involved in three tournaments and could hopefully win some silverware.

“I saw it as a great opportunity to get my feet wet in the UK. But I haven’t been called up for Canada since the Scotland match. But after winning a cup here with Derry, hopefully I’ll be back on their radar and get back in soon.”

Packing his bags for foreign adventures is nothing new for the 25-year-old who played in Spain for Deportivo La Coruna’s reserves and third-tier side Coruxo before that.

He holds a British passport as his father was born in Canterbury before moving to Canada as a kid.

Fisk said: “Spain was incredible. I grew up with all my favourite players playing for Barcelona and Real Madrid so I was engulfed in that culture and really enjoyed my time there.”

And while Bohs had an awful record against Derry – beaten 10 times before that recent league win – they’re in good form and thumped Cork 4-2 on Friday.

Fisk said: “We can’t take them lightly but hopefully we can take the momentum from Sunday’s final into tomorrow’s game and beat them.”
