BOY’S CANCER HELL

Family’s anger over wait for treatment

- BY AILBHE DALY

Brandon Bolger, 10, second from left, with his family A DISTRAUGHT dad has told how his young son is being made to wait for crucial cancer treatment.

Brave Brandon Bolger, 10, was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma – a rare disease affecting bone or soft tissue – last March.

Since then he has been receiving strong doses of chemotherapy at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin every two weeks. The schoolboy, from Kildare, was unable to receive treatment last Friday and was left waiting until last night to get a bed, despite being told last week there would be one available for him.

Brandon’s furious dad Craig, 43, told the Irish Mirror: “We were as much as told we shouldn’t be saying anything but we were worried because he needs his treatment.

“It isn’t the first time they have made us wait for a bed.

“Brandon finally got a bed tonight but that was because we rang and sent in complaints about it.

“We shouldn’t have to fight for our son’s treatment.” Senator Jennifer Murnane O’connor blasted the hospital for keeping the boy waiting.

She added: “Brandon is already five days overdue his treatment, this is totally unacceptable.

“I intend to take this matter up with the Health Minister.” Crumlin Children’s Hospital did not respond to a request for comment when contacted yesterday.

Brandon is fundraising for a tractor he plans to use to help raise money for sick kids.

He intends to paint the tractor yellow and take it to shows where people will be charged a small fee to ride on it, with all money going to Crumlin Hospital.
