FRIENDS have paid tribute to an Irish holidaymaker found dead off a Spanish beach.

The body of Theresa Whaley, 56, was discovered floating in the water by a walker at Isla Plana, a village near the south-eastern port city of Cartagena.

Her body is understood to have been identified by her husband Pat.

The beach where the tragic find was made, at around 8.40am on Sunday, is called Muelle del Maestro Romero.

The couple are believed to have been out with friends the night before hospital worker Theresa, from Mullingar, Co Westmeath, who was due to turn 57 later this month, was found dead.

The results of the postmortem have not been made public, as is customary in Spain, although police have ruled out foul play.

It is not clear at this stage how and why she ended up on the beach after her night out.

A friend writing on a Facebook community page covering the road where she lived, said: “Theresa Whaley nee Lynch has passed away in Spain.

“She lived in St Brigid’s all her life, always had a smile and a big hello for everyone.

“I’d like to express my deepest sympathy to her husband Pat, her children, the Lynch family and all who knew her. She will be missed. May she rest in peace.”

LOVELY

Catherine Baker wrote: “Can’t believe this. RIP Theresa. A great neighbour and such a lovely person.”

Sandra Keena Lyons added: “Can’t believe it. She had only started working in the hospital in the last while.

“Always had a smile and very unassuming. Can’t believe it. May she rest in peace.”

Theresa’s daughter posted a picture of her with her mum on Facebook by way of tribute.

A friend replied: “So sorry to hear this Ruth. Thinking of you all.”

A spokesman for the Guardia Civil in Murcia, which dealt with the investigation, confirmed: “A 56-year-old Irish woman was found dead on Sunday morning.

“There is nothing at this stage to indicate the death was the result of any crime.

“Everything is pointing towards it being an accident or the result of natural causes.

“We cannot make any further comment at this time.”
