Two teachers & accountant spared jailed for bar brawl
TWO primary school teachers and an accountant have been spared jail over an “ugly” 10-man bar brawl.
Five of the accused pleaded guilty to violent disorder after a row broke out at Mcgowan’s pub in Phibsborough, North Dublin, on July 14, 2017.
Teachers Michael Davitt, from Clanmaurice Road, Donnycarney, and Seamus O Cearra, both 34, from Mount Symon Green, Clonsilla, were each ordered to donate €800 to charity.
O Cearra, was also given a one-month suspended sentence on condition he keeps the peace for six months.
Judge Brian O’shea said “they had let their profession and themselves down in a most egregious way”.
Accountant Conor Shannon, 33, from Glendale Estate, Leixlip, Co Kildare, was also ordered to donate €800 to charity.
Judge O’shea told Shannon and
Davitt to appear again in March next year and they would get the Probation Act if they complied with the order.
Warehouse manager Stephen Cantwell, 28, from Collins Avenue, and 31-year-old electrician David Mcsweeney, from Mckee Avenue, Finglas, also appeared in court over the incident.
Mr Mcsweeney, who was celebrating his birthday on the night, faced an extra charge for producing a glass as a weapon. He had 27 convictions and waited for the “perfect moment” before throwing a pint glass into O Cearra’s face.
Mcsweeney was jailed for six months while Cantwell was given a two-month suspended term. He must also give
€800 to charity.
