Freeman hits out at rival candidates

ARAS hopeful Joan Freeman has taken a swipe at her rivals claiming unlike them she is not trying to sell anything.

The Senator also said her religious beliefs would have no bearing on her role as Head of State if elected.

Criticisin­g her fellow candidates in the run-up to next month’s poll, Ms Freeman said: “There’s been a lot of talk about business people running for the election. I’m a business person too.

“I started off with nothing and led it to now with over 250 employees with 15 locations. The difference between myself and other business have nothing to sell.”

The Pieta House founder, who voted No in the abortion poll, added her religious beliefs would have no impact on her presidency.

She said: “Well it’s public knowledge that I voted no in the last referendum but it’s also public knowledge I voted yes in the same-sex marriage [referendum].

Ms Freeman also told Virgin Media One’s Tonight Show she would sign a Bill into law dealing with abortion. The candidates is

I60-year-old, who was nominated to the Senate by then Taoiseach Enda Kenny in 2016, denied she is a member of Catholic organisati­on the Iona Institute.

Meanwhile, Micheal Martin last night said he firmly believes Michael D Higgins is the best candidate.

The Fianna Fail accepted he voted for current hopeful Sean

Joan Freeman leader Gallagher in the 2011 election, but insists President Higgins is the “best for the job”.

He told Ryan Tubridy on the Late Late Show: “Michael D Higgins has done a very good job. I like Michael D. I think he’s been a good President, and I want him to continue as President.” Other candidates who have entered the Aras race are Peter Casey, Sean Gallagher, Gavin Duffy and Sinn Fein’s Liadh Ni Riada.
