VYDRA’S GOAL IS TO LIFT CLARETS

- BY MIKE WHALLEY

MATEJ VYDRA admits Burnley’s rocky start has shattered confidence – and that they must find goals to get out of their rut.

The Clarets are bottom of the Premier League with just one point from five games after their worst start to a top-flight season since 1927.

Sean Dyche’s side, who started their Europa

League campaign in late July after finishing seventh last term, have scored only three league goals so far, and centre-back James Tarkowski has two of them.

Czech striker Vydra (above), signed for £11million from Derby last month, believes a home win today over Bournemouth will lift the mood.

He said: “Confidence is a little low right now but one or two wins and everything will change for us.

“A lot of people don’t know how important confidence is.

“If you don’t have confidence, then you are scared to play and do what you normally do.

“Now we need to score one or two goals and confidence will come, because right now the top goalscorer is James Tarkowski. It’s not the best statistic for the strikers but we have played only five games.”

Vydra, 26, is aiming to put down roots after becoming a football nomad – having played in three countries even before he arrived in England as a 20-year-old to join Watford.

He has changed clubs in five out of the six summers since, having had two spells at Vicarage Road and played for West Brom and Derby before his switch north.

He said: “If you change your club almost every year, you start to think, ‘What’s wrong with me? Why am I not staying at one club more than two years?’

“Almost every year I changed house. It’s more like a hotel than your own house. But I am 26 years old and I have lived without my friends for 15 years. It’s normal for me to move to a new house.

“This club is very good. Everyone has tried to be friendly here. It’s good for me, as I can be focused for the games.”
