SHUT IT SHIELS, SAYS REYNOLDS
ALAN REYNOLDS has warned Kenny Shiels to keep his nose out of Waterford’s business.
Shiels’ Derry City side have slipped out of top-four contention and currently reside in seventh spot in the Airtricity League.
The Candystripes’ latest setback came on Saturday, when they lost 1-0 at home to Shamrock Rovers thanks to a goal from sub Danny Carr.
But Shiels has tried to deflect from his own problems by claiming a fifth-place finish would secure European qualification for his team.
The suggestion is based on his belief that Waterford would be barred from European competition due to UEFA rules.
The Blues sit fourth in the table, which would seal a Europa League berth provided one of the top two, Dundalk or Cork City, lift the FAI Cup.
UEFA don’t permit clubs less than two years in existence entry into their competitions without special dispensation. The rule cost Derry their place in the 2012/2013 Europa League after they’d set up under a new company.
Blues owner Lee Power changed the club’s name from Waterford United to Waterford FC early last year after taking control.
However, the fact he settled debts attached to the previous entity means Waterford are unlikely to be excluded.
That didn’t prevent Shiels hopping the ball, but Reynolds blasted back: “Kenny Shiels has a lot to say for himself, from what I see and hear.
“I think Kenny should look after his own results in Derry.
“I don’t have any clarity on our situation with UEFA but we’ve had a fantastic season back in the Premier after getting promoted.”
