ALNWICK SAVES BEST TILL LAST FOR TROTTERS

- BY MEL HENDERSON

BEN ALNWICK modestly deflected the praise after his late world-class save earned 10-man Bolton a point.

Alnwick (above) flew high to his left four minutes from the end to claw away home skipper Luke Chambers’ net-bound header.

The Trotters captain agreed it was one of the best saves of his career, but added: “It was the least I could do after the lads in front of me grafted so hard.

“Their lad whipped in a great ball, a real teaser, and in that situation you’ve just got to be ready for someone getting the slightest of touches on it.”

Alnwick’s save apart, the only other talking point was the 34th-minute dismissal of Bolton defender Marc Wilson.

He was punished for grabbing Kayden Jackson as the Ipswich striker burst through.

Alnwick added: “I don’t want to be harsh on the ref, but I didn’t think it was a sending-off.

“They both had hold of each other – some weeks you get them, other weeks you don’t.

“When we went down to 10 men so early we’d have snapped your hand off for a point.

“But spirits were high at halftime and we were even talking about going on to win the game.

“We knuckled down and a point was the very least we deserved.”

Nothing is going right for a new-look Ipswich fashioned by Paul Hurst, who made 12 summer signings. Hurst, 44 tomorrow, is under enormous pressure after going win-less in 10 games in all competitions.

But defender Toto Nsiala said: “We can turn it around. One win – and I don’t care how we get it – will get everyone going.”
