half of what he’s done. I grew up watching him and, being a Liverpool fan, it was brilliant going to Anfield and watching him score.”

Wilson was instrumental in helping Derby recover from a poor start. They were behind after just 54 seconds to a Henrik Dalsgaard header.

But Wilson slotted home the equaliser and his first goal in a Derby shirt, before David Nugent put the hosts in front. Wilson was then tripped for Mason Mount to curl home a stunning free-kick. “I was desperate to get off the mark. So to do that was great and I’m now looking forward to getting more,” said Wilson.

“It was a good feeling when it went in. I’m here because I wanted to play in an attacking team that plays good football. I want to show Jurgen that I can play in a free-flowing team against good sides.

Brentford had suffered only one defeat prior to their trip to Pride Park, but Lewis Macleod admitted it was a bad day at the office. He said: “It was nice to get off to a good start, but we had a bad 15 minutes after that and, ultimately, it wasn’t good enough.”
