Mr Higgins must attend Aras debate
PRESIDENT Michael D Higgins submitted his nomination papers yesterday to officially enter the race for the Aras.
In keeping with precedent, they were lodged by his authorised representative Art O’leary.
This is one of the privileges which comes with the post but having the right to shy away from presidential debates is not another one.
Yesterday Mr Higgins confirmed he will not take part in the first discussion which takes place on Thursday citing pre-existing Presidential commitments.
When the others in the race are subjected to intense questioning during what are often very heated debates, there is no reason why he should be treated differently.
They are the only opportunity the public has to assess the qualities of the various candidates so they can make an informed decision on which to vote for.
Yesterday President Higgins’ camp announced he is looking forward to engaging with the other candidates and answering journalists’ questions in the next few weeks, which is to be welcomed.
He disappointed many people by reneging on a pledge not to run for a second term so if he wants to return to the Aras, like the other candidates, he should explain to the public why he deserves to be there for another seven years.
