Booze, fizzy drinks and ice-creams combined to produce an extra €29million compared to last year – showing the effects of the heatwave on spending habits.

Tesco has held on to the top spot for the sixth consecutive period – capturing 22.1% of grocery spend, up from the 21.9% it achieved in the same period last year.

Supervalu sits in second position, recording 21.7% market share, Dunnes Stores placed third with 21.5% while Lidl and Aldi sat in fourth and fifth.

David Berry, director at Kantar Worldpanel which carried out the survey, said: “Competition in the grocery market has rarely been fiercer.

“All the major retailers are in growth once again this period and it’s almost neck-and-neck in the race for market share.

“Just half a percentage point separates the leading three retailers.

“Tesco leads the way, followed by Supervalu and Dunnes Stores.

“This healthy competition is good news for shoppers, leading to a fall in the price of food and drink across Ireland.” But it was Supervalu who sold the most alcohol over the summer period.

Mr Berry said: “Supervalu cashed in on summer alcohol sales, overtaking Tesco as the leading alcohol retailer and capturing 26% spend in the category.”

Meanwhile, the hot weather is making a welcome return as Met Eireann revealed temperatures are set to climb into the low 20s this week.

A spokesman said: “High pressure looks set to dominate, bringing a good deal of dry weather across the country but there will be rain at times, mainly in the north and northwest.

“Sunny spells will develop across many southern and eastern areas on Wednesday, feeling noticeably warmer with top temperatures of 17C to 21C.

“High pressure will remain the dominant feature over the weekend with a good deal of dry weather across the country.” of shopper
