KOP ATTACK SEAN MOVED TO CARE UNIT

- BY WILLIAM DUNNE

THE Irish Liverpool fan who was viciously beaten by Italian thugs outside Anfield has been moved to a rehabilitation centre as he continues his recovery.

Dad-of-three Sean Cox suffered horrific head injuries after being attacked before a Champions League tie six months ago.

The 53-year-old has now been moved from Beaumont Hospital to the National Rehabilitation Centre in Dun Laoghaire, Dublin.

And a Gofundme page “Support Sean” was yesterday launched to raise €500,000 towards the Co Meath man’s medical costs.

Dunboyne GAA told of its drive to help the club’s former chairman who “worked tirelessly to contribute to and enhance our community”. It said: “Over the past number of months Sean has been taking small but important steps on a road to recovery.

“His journey will be a long and difficult one and the focus will continue on ensuring the best possible care to maximise the potential in Sean’s recovery.

“Sean has recently commenced a programme of rehabilitation in Dun Laoghaire and following this will continue to require ongoing and intensive long-term care and support.

“The reality is the provision of this long-term care and support for Sean will necessitate significant funding over many years.”

The popular man was left fighting for his life after the incident before the Reds’ first-leg tie against Roma at Anfield on April 24. Italian football fan Filippo Lombardi, 21, is accused of inflicting grievous bodily harm and is due to appear before an English court next Wednesday.

Lombardi denies the charge but has admitted violent disorder. Another Roma supporter Daniele Sciusco, 29, was jailed for two-anda-half years after admitting violent disorder before the match – although Sciusco was not directly involved in causing Sean’s injuries.

Video footage showed the group of about 25 fans, all in dark clothing, going on to Walton Breck Road, outside the stadium.
