BIG TOURNAMENTS ARE THE MOMENTS YOU LIVE FOR

- BY PAUL O’HEHIR

Martin O’neill will be underfire once again if his team’s habit of shipping goals in competitive games continues this evening and against Wales on Tuesday.

They have leaked nine in their last two – against the Danes in the World Cup playoff and in Cardiff last month – but confidence was restored after a friendly draw in Poland.

That meek 4-1 surrender away to Wales still grates with Bristol City winger O’dowda but he insists it is not a sign in disarray in the camp after a turbulent two months.

O’dowda said: “You have games like that. It’s football.

“We should have been a lot better which is the annoying thing. I’m getting frustrated just talking about it now. I wouldn’t CALLUM O’DOWDA is not afraid to have 20-20 vision.

The Bristol City winger, who is in line to win his

13th Ireland cap against Denmark tonight, wants a taste of the big tournaments.

He was close to making Martin O’neill’s final squad for Euro 2016 and trained with the chosen ones at their Fota Island base as the 24th man prior to departure. O’neill once claimed O’dowda could be the future of this Irish team and the

23-year-old is being turned to more often.

“As I’m getting older I think I’m starting to grow into it a bit more,” he said of his international career. “I’m trying to become more established in the team and I want to be involved in the major competitions. You’ve got these Nations League games, the Euros and then the next World Cup – and I’m already thinking to that.”

O’dowda continued: “I know I was close to the Euros when I first came in and being around the squad then was probably one of the most enjoyable times of my career.

“I didn’t even go but I loved every minute of it. And then there were the

World Cup qualifiers.

“It’s the biggest stage and that’s why you play football. Those are the moments you live for.”
