750 NEW POSTS EIR ON THE WAY

Jobs are created to improve firm’s customer service

- BY SAM ROBERTS

TELECOMMUNICATIONS firm Eir has announced the creation of 750 jobs across Ireland.

The positions are primarily in customer service and will be across the company’s regional locations in Sligo, Cork and Limerick.

Just under half of the posts will be based in the new state-of-the-art facility at Rathedmond in Sligo town.

The announcement comes a month after Eir ended its deal with call centre operators HCL Technologies as the telecommunications provider looks to move its customer service functions back in-house.

A spokesman said: “Our aim is to improve our customer experience and to do that we want to have more Eir customers speaking directly to Eir employees who have a stronger connection and commitment to the brand.

“This is why we have brought our customer-facing functions back in-house. This new state-of-the-art facility in Sligo and the announcement of these new local jobs supports this aim as well as our commitment to our national footprint.

“The reason for announcing these positions today is part of a large recruitment drive we are currently embarking on and we encourage people around Sligo, Cork and Limerick to apply.”

Junior Minister Sean Canney welcomed the investment in the regions, which he said acts to counter the “overdevelopment” of the major cities. He added: “This Government is committed to ensuring the benefits of the economic recovery continue to reach well beyond our cities and today’s announcement is in recognition of the immense talent that exists in every part of Ireland.

“Projects located in the regions also tie in with the Programme for Government commitment to the Atlantic Economic Corridor to act as a counterbalance to overdevelopment in urban regions.

“I am very happy to welcome Eir to Sligo.”

A number of employees at HCL’S Limerick and Cork offices will transfer to the new roles.

It was also revealed HCL staff in Dublin were given the opportunity to relocate outside the capital to one of the new positions.
