A CONVICTED rapist who kidnapped a prostitute was at the centre of a 16-hour siege after going on a suspected shotgun rampage.

Stephen “Madser” Doherty had a stand-off with gardai at his home in Clondalkin, West Dublin, after allegedly going to hunt for the culprits who spray-painted the side of his house.

The Irish Mirror understands two youngsters were paid €50 to write “rapist sex offender out” on his walls, but they botched the job and ended up writing “sex out”.

They made a second attempt at it on Tuesday night and after seeing the wall Doherty allegedly grabbed his shotgun and went on the hunt for them. One witness said the sex beast came running at him on Wednesday before going, “Oh it’s only you” and moving on.

He added: “He came running out with a shotgun and just a dressing gown.

“He didn’t catch the boys but he knew it was someone in the area.

“The graffiti was painted on Monday. Two young fellas actually had it written down for them, they were told to write ‘rapist sex offenders out’, and the stupid lads went around with a can of white paint and wrote ‘sex out’. He [Stephen] was looking for them.”

After allegedly terrifying locals, Doherty retreated back to his home in St Mark’s Drive before gardai and the ASU arrived at around 9am.

His mother was believed to be in the house at the time.

Doherty allegedly threw an object resembling a handgun out of his window during the 16-hour stand-off.

It eventually came to an end at around 1am yesterday after armed officers burst into a house and secured a suspect.

A garda spokesperson said: “A Taser device was used and the matter has been referred to the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission.

“One individual, male, was involved in this incident and was arrested and is currently in Garda custody.”

Locals told the Irish Mirror Doherty was a gun “fanatic”.

A former friend said: “He’s been like that for years.

“I used to hang out with him but not anymore, nobody has since he went to prison.”

In 2004, Doherty was sentenced to 10 years after kidnapping a prostitute from WB Yeats’ former home, raping her and threatening to kill her.

After being released in 2014, he spent a number of years in Celbridge, Co Kildare, before moving back to St Mark’s.
