You Dons should be Red faced

- BY ANTHONY HAGGERTY

ABERDEEN were last night branded an embarrassment after their League Cup ticket stance blew up in their face.

Derek Mcinnes’ men fought for a 50-50 split for the semi-final showdown with Rangers on Sunday week but have now had their allocation slashed due to poor sales.

Their initial allocation of 16,800 was bumped up to 20,300 by the SPFL but the Dons’ protests have backfired with just 9000 snapped up by the Red Army.

The prospect of swathes of empty seats being on show at Hampden for the showpiece occasion led to the Dons handing back more than 5000 tickets.

Former Rangers star Derek Ferguson put the boot into the Red Army as he questioned their apathy for such a big game and welcomed the news the surplus seats will now be sold to Rangers fans.

Ferguson – who has a foot in both camps as his son Lewis plays for the Dons – said: “It’s embarrassing that Aberdeen have only shifted 9000 tickets.

“This is the League Cup semi-final for goodness sake.

“There should not be empty seats at Hampen for such an important match.

“How is it going to look on the TV coverage if there are spaces inside the National Stadium?

“Major cup semi-finals are an occasion and should always be a cause for a football celebration.

“The Dons fans appear to be totally disinterested and you have to ask why they can’t even bothered to turn up at Hampden to cheer on their team.”
