MUM ‘STRANGLED & BEATEN TO DEATH’
Man held after body of 33yr-old found in flat
GARDAI are set to launch a murder probe after a mother of two was found dead following a vicious assault, sources have told the Irish Mirror.
Officers and emergency services rushed to the scene after the body of Amanda Carroll, 33, was discovered at a flat in North Dublin.
Last night a man in his mid-30s was being questioned by gardai.
A source said: “It appears she had been strangled and beaten by her attacker who investigators
believe was known to her.” Gardai were called yesterday afternoon at around 2.30pm to help a Dublin Fire Brigade Unit who found the dead woman.
A manhunt then began for a suspect who allegedly fled the scene at Homestead Court, Quarry Road, Cabra.
The source added: “DFB were at the call first – they were dealing with a report of a car on fire.
“As they were at the scene they discovered the body of the woman, possibly in the apartment.
“In a strange twist it appears the woman was in contact with the gardai on Saturday night following a road traffic incident.” The source said the probe is likely to be upgraded to murder.
Gardai hunted down the suspect – who sources said is well-known to them – at 6.30pm.
He was arrested and taken to Store Street station where he was detained for questioning. He can be held for a total of 24 hours. Detectives from Mountjoy and Store Street are assisting their colleagues in Cabra.
The source added: “A postmortem is due but investigators believe the woman may have been beaten and then strangled to death.”
A Garda spokeswoman said last night: “The scene has been preserved and the Garda Technical Bureau are carrying out an examination of the scene at this time.” The body was removed with a postmortem due to be carried out this morning.
The spokeswoman added: “A man has been arrested in relation to this investigation and is currently detained at Mountjoy Garda station under Section 4, Criminal Justice Act, 1984. Investigations ongoing.”
Last night pals paid tribute to the mum on her Facebook page.
One wrote: “Rip Amanda xx a old neighbour thinking of your two beautiful boys watch over them xxx.”
Another added: “RIP Amanda. God give her boys family and friends strength to get through this.” Former minister Joe Costello, who dealt with residents of the Dublin City Council complex in the past, described the tragedy as “absolutely shocking”.
He told the Irish Mirror: “It’s certainly very tragic someone would die in what appears to be very violent circumstances.
“It’s very sad and very tragic. She has two children as well.
“It’s totally out of any form of behaviour in that area or complex. It’s very settled in that area and that whole Cabra complex.
“It’s absolutely shocking and it will have huge implications for children and families in the area.”
