Hollywood star Ferrell snaps up holiday home after hen party advice

A BRIDE-TO-BE is taking credit for Hollywood actor Will Ferrell buying a country house in Cavan.

The Anchorman star bumped into a hen party from the Breffni county in Lisbon – and is now thought to have snapped up a stunning estate in the county.

Ciara Mccabe from Crosserlough and her bridesmaid Michelle Kiernan, partied with 14 pals in the Portuguese capital earlier this year.

While in a restaurant the girls noticed the 51-year-old dining on his own and approached him. Michelle said: “He was so friendly, a lovely man, and now he is going to be my neighbour.

“We had great craic with him, he said he enjoyed every minute of the night with us and was surprised by how lively and friendly us bunch of Cavan ladies were. He said we were a breath of fresh air.

“He told us about his search for his ancestors in Longford and I told him he should come visit my hometown in Kilnaleck, Cavan, next time he is over and it looks like he took me up on my offer.” Ferrell told the girls he was in Lisbon doing research for an upcoming film about the Eurovision.

He is believed to have bought a holiday home, Arley, an estate in Mountnugent, Cavan, only three miles down the road from Michelle’s Kilnaleck base.

Ciara said: “Such surprise to run into one of your favourite actors, who was so down-to-earth and friendly and on top of that for him to join us for a drink. It has left me with wonderful memories.”

THE long and short of it is, Ireland’s hairdressers are going to suffer drastically over the new VAT hike.

The jump from 9% to 13.5% won’t swell the Goverment’s coffers, but may well put little salons out of business for good.

It’s not just the posh and busy hairdressers in large cities that will be hit, but every little snip-shop on every village main street in Ireland.

Finance Minister Pascal Donohoe was wrong to lump them into the hospitality sector in the first place.

They don’t belong in with multinational hotels and big restaurants which are booming.

Small salons were only getting back on their feet after years of recession and now the Government is pulling the carpet out from under them.

This VAT hike will drive customers to use black market operators who can offer cheaper prices and jobs will be hit in the already hard-pressed sector.

Past president of the Irish Hairdressing Federation Aidan Fitzgerald claims they have been abandoned by the Government. He’s right.

Mr Donohoe thought he was going to snip a few bob from the hairdressers, but he could well end up leaving their business – like their customers’ hair – on the cutting floor.
