IT IS ONLY THE START FOR TRENT

- BY DAVID MADDOCK

TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD admits being left out of Liverpool’s starting line-up shows he must keep improving.

The full-back (above, left), 20, has not made the first XI in the last two matches and said: “The aim is to be a regular and one of the first names on the teamsheet... if it’s not happening there’s obviously room for improvement.

“It will take time and a lot of hard work so it’s just a case of being patient. It’s a world-class club and there is competition for places.

“It’s wrong if you go into a game and think you’re starting week-in, week-out. It’s only right there’s rotation. Keeping people on their toes is the best way to get the best out of people.”

Not that Alexander-arnold has much to beat himself up about. In a stellar year he announced himself by playing in the Champions League Final and at the World Cup.

But the England right-back believes playing games like this Champions League tie at

Anfield against tough opponents is the perfect opportunity to learn.

“That’s why you want to play in this competition – to pit yourself against the best players in the world and really test yourself,” he added.

“I have always wanted to play against players such as Ronaldo and Neymar.

“Obviously, we got beaten by Real Madrid in last season’s final, but we took things away from that and used it as motivation.

“Many people, not even me, would’ve imagined it going the way it has. It’s down to the opportunities and the chances I’ve been given. It’s something I’m really grateful for and there will be more.”
