EUR BETTER OFF OUT OF IT SAYS MAC

DAVE MCPHERSON hailed Rangers’ 10-game unbeaten run in Europe – and then virtually admitted he’d rather see them go out.

Mcpherson, part of the Rangers team that went so close to a place in the Champions League final in 1993, said he would rather see the Scottish giants win the title than reach the later stages of the Europa League.

Former defender Mcpherson is full of respect for the job Steven Gerrard (above) has done after Rangers climbed from the financial abyss and the failed experiments of previous bosses such as Pedro Caixinha and Mark Warburton.

The 54-year-old said: “To go through 10 matches unbeaten in European competition at any time is a great achievement.

“Rangers and Steven Gerrard deserve enormous credit. The manager has clearly instilled confidence but I’d still rather see them win the league.

“In fairness, a run in Europe over the next few months may be as important in its own way as the unbeaten games we enjoyed in 199293. Back then our team had basically been constructed – Walter Smith only needed to add one or two players over the summer, rather than make wholesale changes.

“Gerrard is still trying to find his way with a new-look squad and my only fear is that Europe may be a bit of a distraction for him as they also bid to push in the Premiership.”
