PRE-SEASON GAMES AFFECTING OUR CLUBS

- BY MICHAEL SCULLY

EOIN MURPHY believes the GAA should cut out pre-season inter-county competitions to reduce player burnout and club neglect.

Following on from Brian Cody’s comments about the “slaughtering” of county players and his concerns for the future of the club scene, Murphy feels there’s an obvious solution available.

“We’re getting extra games but I think something has to give,” the four-time All-ireland winner said.

“Whether it’s the League shortened, or pre-season with the Walsh Cup – I think maybe that has to be forgotten about. Because club seasons are suffering.

“Club players have as much passion as us. We’ve as much drive to win an intermediate Championship in Kilkenny.

“But they’re being forgotten about by the GAA.” Something needs to be done.

Meanwhile, Murphy (right) believes that David Herity will drive on the progress of the Kildare hurlers following his recent appointment as manager.

Kildare clinched the Christy Ring Cup last year and that will be the platform that Herity will work off now, after stepping down as Dublin camogie manager last month.

“He was always someone thinking outside the box,” said Murphy.

“Even when we were training, doing different drills, he was just a perfectionist.

“Obviously a brilliant trainer as well - he would give everything 100 per cent, all of the time.

“You see the good work he’s done with Dublin camogie as well, brought them on no end.”
