Liam tribute game raises €1.5m
THE sold-out tribute match for soccer star Liam Miller raised €1.5million, organisers confirmed yesterday.
More than 42,800 people packed into Pairc Ui Chaoimh in Cork last month to see a host of football legends honour the Corkman, who lost his battle to cancer in February.
The match and gala dinner proved to be a huge occasion with organiser Michael O’flynn confirming €1million of the net profit will go into a trust for Miller’s family. A further €250,000 is set to be donated to Cork’s Marymount Hospice and €100,000 will go to a fund for Jack O’driscoll, a local youngster who suffered life-changing Ex-players and, inset, Miller spinal injuries after a freak accident during Storm Emma.
Mercy Hospital Foundation And Oesophageal Cancer Fund will both benefit with €35,000 donations, it was announced. A statement from the Miller family said: “We would like to thank everyone involved from the bottom of our hearts.
“The love and support you have shown will always be remembered and treasured by us.”
