Hospital links with nursing homes crucial for care

- BY TREVOR QUINN

ENGAGEMENT between nursing homes and acute hospitals is crucial to care properly for older people, it was claimed yesterday.

Nursing Homes Ireland said its latest report suggests 1,200 beds are available across the country within private and voluntary nursing homes.

Chief Tadhg Daly said: “It is incumbent upon our health service to ensure older people who have completed their care in our hospitals are enabled to transition back into their communities in a timely manner.

“Close, day-to-day engagement between acute hospital management and our nursing homes at local level is critical to free-up beds and facilitate effectiveness in healthcare delivery.”
